LessonsLessons here at Soli Deo consist of listening and engaging with the new students, feeling out their vocal ranges, timbre, warmth, power and dictation to accurately give a personalized training routine best suited for growth. Having worked with students of different age groups, each person is at a unique point in their journey, and meeting him/her where they’re at is our top priority.
These lessons will focus on vocal training primarily, most of the time without accompaniment. This is to better hear the voice up close and fine tune anything that is needed. Techniques such as: breathing longevity, sound placement and quality, resonance, air direction and flow, ping, head voice vs chest voice, tightness vs looseness, proper dictation, musicality and performance, and much more will become the bread and butter of these sessions. This will involve expanding outside comfort ranges, sounding/acting/looking a bit silly, but will have drastic payoffs in the long run.
As for musical scores, we do not teach the music specifically, that is, note-by-note learning. There is an expectation to learn music on your own and bring it to your lesson time, and we will work to improve the performance aspect of these pieces. However, it is entirely within our scope to recommend pieces for you to look at and study based on your preferences and desires.
Many classical students in their respective schools/universities are required to perform in foreign languages for their juries, recitals, and for other academic purposes, and we would be glad to help improve those to the fullest (We know this process quite well!). And as a disclaimer, if you are not comfortable performing pieces just yet, no worries! We take each student’s time as slowly as need be, and are flexible enough to work our way up to songs at your pace.
And lastly, if you wish to bring your own instrument, be it a guitar or something else space-friendly, to use as a tool while you sing, you are free to. Many musicians need to be able to play and sing simultaneously, and our lesson time can absolutely be devoted to working on that. (PS. If you’re in a worship team, this might be a great opportunity for you!)
